Arturo Caballero - Contemporary artist.
Arturo Caballero (1994) is a Peruvian visual artist based in Lima. His artistic journey began through photography, exploring documentary, fine art, street, and landscape photography as ways of observing, interpreting, and capturing fragments of reality. His work in documentary and street photography led him to discover urban art as a powerful form of cultural and artistic expression, where identity, collective memory, and the multiple narratives that inhabit public space converge. Through this perspective, he found in the streets a territory for visual exploration—a setting where traces of time, colors, and cultural manifestations engage in dialogue with everyday life.
Over time, his photographic practice encouraged him to explore new possibilities within the art world, finding in painting a space to expand the boundaries of the image. Through an experimental process, he began transferring the photographs he captured into a material dimension, seeking to give form, texture, and relief to what initially existed as a two-dimensional image.
This transition marked the beginning of a pictorial investigation centered on abstraction, layers, color, and materiality. Through the use of textures and relief, Caballero transforms the painted surface into a space for sensory exploration, where each layer acquires presence and each mark evokes an experience, a transformation, or a memory.
His work proposes a new way of perceiving the world and art, establishing a dialogue between photography, urban culture, and abstract painting. His practice unfolds as a continuous exploration of the expressive possibilities of image and matter, in which experimentation becomes a means of transforming reality and constructing a visual language of his own.
... "My work focuses on exploring high relief, texture, and color. As an integral part of my culture and heritage, color holds a fundamental place in my practice, emerging as an element of great power and presence "
It is important to note that the use of color and texture plays a central role in the vast majority of his works, as it reveals the vibrant, chaotic life of my country—and, through that, its history.
As self-taught artist, his practice has been shaped by personal experience, research, and an ongoing commitment to independent learning. Throughout my creative process, he have often drawn inspiration from my culture, history, and roots to explore and bring new possibilities to life, allowing curiosity and the desire to create to guide the development of my work—ensuring that every piece possesses a unique spirit of its own to share.
